Deuteronomy 8.17

Do not say to yourself, ‘My power and the might of my own hand have gained me this wealth.’ Deuteronomy 8.17

Moses forewarned the nation Israel of forgetting the mighty hand of God that had brought them out of Egypt and into the promised land. He knew they would one day grow wealthy in the land and begin to think that their national blessings were simply the product of their own efforts. He knew they would fail to give thanks to God for their blessings and become filled with pride.

Take away, O Lord, any thought in us that we have achieved to personal or national greatness by the strength of our own arm. Show us that we are feeble and helpless apart from You and that it is You who have blessed us and now we who have blessed ourselves.
